Oil and Gas Overview: Yoakum County, Texas

Yoakum County, Texas. We’re not talking about guitars and Cadillacs, but it is a thousand miles from nowhere. Regrettably, Yoakum County is not, in fact, named after Dwight “Yoakam”. It is, however, a large producer of oil and gas in the Permian Basin of Texas. Over 110 drilling permits were issued in 2024 alone. Besides hydrocarbon production, the County sees substantial environmental impacts in other areas: Wastewater storage, pipelines, truck transportation, brine extraction and refinement, natural gas flaring, bitcoin mining, data centers, and more. It’s an important County. Just don’t drink the water or breathe the air.
